Efoil Lessons Near Toledo, Ohio: The Most Exciting Water Sport You Haven't Tried Yet
Share
If you're in Toledo and you're into water sports β or just looking for something genuinely new to do this summer β there's an experience less than 30 minutes away in Monroe, Michigan that most people in the area don't know exists yet.
Detroit E-Foil is now offering electric hydrofoil lessons in Monroe, Michigan. That means Toledo residents have access to one of the most thrilling water sports in the world, right in their backyard.
What Is E-Foiling?
An efoil is an electric hydrofoil board β think a surfboard with a silent electric motor and an underwater wing that lifts you completely above the surface of the water as you ride. No waves needed. No boat. No wake. Just you, hovering silently above Lake Erie while everyone on shore wonders what they're looking at.
It sounds intimidating, but it's not. Most riders are up and hovering within their first hour on the board. You don't need any prior surfing, wakeboarding, or water sports experience. If you can balance and follow basic instructions, you can efoil.

Where: Monroe, Michigan β 25 Minutes from Toledo
Lake Monroe location puts efoil lessons within easy reach of Toledo. Monroe sits right on the western basin of Lake Erie β one of the most beautiful stretches of water in the Midwest β and is a straight shot up I-75 from Toledo. You're on the water in under 30 minutes from most parts of the city.
Lake Erie's western basin is famous for its calm, clear water and stunning open-lake views. It's the same stretch of water known worldwide as the walleye capital of the world β and now it's also the place to learn to fly above the water on an efoil.

What to Expect From Your Lesson
Lessons run about one hour and are structured so that even total beginners progress quickly. Here's what a typical lesson looks like:
Land lesson first. Before you ever touch the water, your instructor walks you through safety, the riding area, how to get on the board, and the proper stance. You'll also learn how to operate the board's remote control. This takes about 15 minutes and makes everything on the water much smoother.
On your stomach. You start prone on the board, getting comfortable with the speed, weight distribution, and turning. This is where you build your first feel for the board.
To your knees. From here you start working the hydrofoil β leaning forward and back to find the angle that lifts you off the water. Most people get their first taste of actual foiling in this stage.
Standing up. Once you're foiling on your knees, your instructor guides you to standing. The goal is finding that sweet spot where the board lifts and holds you above the water. When it clicks, it really clicks β and it feels like nothing else.
Everything is included: helmet, life jacket, and a wetsuit if the water temperature calls for it. All you need to bring is a bathing suit, sunscreen, and a towel.
